12 hours!

til I will be lining up at my 2nd ever half marathon. YIKES! Feeling more nervous about this one than I did the first. Not sure why. My training went pretty well. I know that I can cover the distance, not fast, but I can do it. So, why the butterflies???

This is also a decision making time for me. I have to decide how I am going to register for Columbus this year - half or full! If tomorrow goes really well, then I will likely commit to what would be my once-in-a-lifetime full marathon. What a great way to round out my 30s!

Fingers crosssed!

Updates....

First race of 2012 - 31st Annual Shamrock Run. Weather was perfect. Course was not - hilly & brick. But, we did it!

Mileage update:
28.75 + 284.79 = 313.54/1000
I am a few miles ahead of schedule - by my calculations, I should have at least 292.11 as of today. So, barring injury or illness, I am right on track!
Until next time,
Lori

Conflicted

St. Jude's is a wonderful organization. I appreciate the fact that they are one of the very few places the focuses on researching childhood cancer and they provide treatment to children/families without cost (the cost alone can be devastating to families).

However, we were rejected.

Rejected is probably too harsh.

We were not accepted by St. Jude's because we didn't fit nicely into one of their clinical trials. If you don't meet the clinical trial criteria, you do not get in. But once you are in, you are in for life (which hopefully is long and happy).

The kooky thing is, I didn't even want Cameron to be in a clinical trial. Or for us to be that far away from the love and support of family and friends. What I wanted was a miracle. A cure. Hope.

So why am I talking about St. Jude's now?

Samantha is desperate to participate in the St. Jude's Mathathon at her school. (Mostly I think she wants the t-shirt.) She knows that they take care of kids with cancer. Her little booklet has a beautiful bald child on the cover. That child reportedly has AML - the same type of leukemia that Cameron had. She wants to help. She thinks if she can raise some money, she can save a child's life. My little idealistic dreamer.

So, what is a mom to do?

Well, this mom just wrote a $50 check.

Lesson learned!

"The miracle isn't that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start."

Sunday marked t-20 days to the Athens Half Marathon. Thought it would be a good idea to get in one last long training run. It was also an opportunity to give the clothes & shoes I was planning to wear a trial run too. If you want to see the breakdown, checkout my garmin site at: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/156933272

In some ways, I am glad that I did this little experiment. I certainly learned some valuable lessons. The capri pants & shoes were fine. The shirt - black, long-sleeved Under Armor: TOO FREAKING HOT! & it kept riding up on me. The vest may have been ok if it were 10 degrees cooler. The pockets were handy to keep my energy gels in, but that is about it. The absolute worst of all? The stupid freaking sports bra!OMG - I have the worst case of chafing ever! In the most inconvenient of places where every bra that I wear will rub. and burn. and maybe bleed a little.

Guess I need to invest in some of this stuff:

Also, I think I may have mentioned that it was HOT?!? The wonderful city where I run has a beautiful bike path. Unfortunately, the water fountains have been turned off for the winter. I had to go over 6 miles to get to the lone working fountain. Now I am thinking I may need one of these as well - the Handy Hydtration. Holds 10 ounces of water, velcroed to your hand.
I don't want to get carried away with the hydration though cause until the fountains get turned back on, the bathrooms are locked up too! Don't want another episode of peeing in the weeds!

So the moral of this story? Should have taken a marker to my new socks - scratch out bad & add in "dumb!"

A celebration of sorts

In honor of Cameron's 13th Birthday, we went out to dinner tonight with some of the cousins. had more pizza and much more wine.

No cake though. No candles. No "Happy Birthdays!"

There were some tears. Sharing of memories. Looking at photos. More wine.

Now, the day is nearly over. The house is quiet as I am the last one awake.

Out of wine. Not out of tears yet though.

Sucks to be me.
